Maintenance Hand

Job Description

Will evaluate the AARS buildings. Will be responsible for maintenance of AARS structures, grounds, and AARS vehicles. Will inspect the facility to determine problems and the necessary maintenance. Will function as maintenance hand. Will assist client’s assigned AARS jobs / chores in progress.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance of the facility.
  • Keep all AARS equipment in proper running order (i. e. furnace, boilers, stoves, freezer, washer, farm equipment, etc.).
  • Maintain / repair windows, furniture, doors, floors, walls, locks, bathrooms, and minor plumbing.
  • Complete minor repairs on buildings, grounds, plumbing, etc.
  • Provide general maintenance of all AARS vehicles and keep in proper running order, i.e. oil changes, tire repairs, etc.).
  • Be responsible for overall cleanliness / upkeep of AARS facility and other structures.
  • Perform janitorial work at AARS – clean bathrooms, replace light bulbs, sweep floors, and keeping front office areas clean.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks of the AARS facility and campus.
  • Conduct inventories of AARS equipment and supplies under his/her supervision / oversee tool room.
  • Assist with the work assignments of clients and cooperate with the Director of Clinical Services, Clinical Manager and / or Clinical Supervisor in providing therapeutic experiences for clients.
  • Complete documentation on the client’s progress and submits it to the client’s counselor weekly.
  • Learn and maintain client confidentiality within federal and state laws.
  • Help participants understand and employ recovery strategies.
  • Maintain project logs, reports and records in appropriate files and database(s).
  • Attend staff meeting and training workshops or will review staff tapes within 72 hours.
  • Conduct staff training on topics related to the maintenance of AARS facility and other buildings.
  • Prepare and submit incidents reports as needed both positive and negative to Executive Director and other staff.
  • Participate in probationary and annual evaluation meetings and will assist in the annual review of the AARS Operations Manual.
  • Read all policies and procedures manuals of AARS and pass exam.
  • Be responsible to be on-call for all emergencies that arise at AARS, which may include but not be limited to: Power outages, Earthquakes, and Water and sewage issues.
  • Assume other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications & Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in building maintenance, to include furnace, boiler, stove, freezer, washer, dryer, etc., repairs.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance in order to know when to call for expert help.
  • Knowledge of painting, plastering, furniture repair and building remodeling.
  • Knowledge of water, sewer, and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder as a disease. If a recovered SUD person, must be in remission for at least ONE (1) year.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to supervise others as needed.
  • Ability to communicate with clients verbally and non-verbally.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to crises situations and emergencies with good judgment.
  • Must be in good physical condition in order to carry and lift heavy objects (at least 50 lbs.) and to do a variety of maintenance chores.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate or higher education.
  • Must have: Appropriate computer skills, Current TB test (obtainable within the first 30 days of employment); Current First Aid / CPR Cards (obtainable within the first 90 days of employment); Initial COVID vaccinations, provide vaccination card as proof; and; A valid Alaska Driver’s License, with a good driving record and insurable.
  • Must be able to pass the mandated criminal background check with an allowance for a variance.
  • Is a positive role model.
  • Has the ability to enforce client rules.
  • Preferred: Familiar with Alaska Native culture; resident of Mat-Su Valley; experience working with handicapped; some experience with social service agencies; good team worker who can relate well with fellow workers; able to relate to alcoholics, drug abusers, and public inebriates, and familiar with AA / NA treatment philosophies.
  • Has maintained sobriety for at least one (1) year if a recovered alcoholic / drug-abuser.
  • Must possess current certification as Alaska Water and Wastewater operator – Small Water System.
  • Must be a person who is free from allergies, which would interfere with daily AARS life.
  • May be a resident of the Mat-Su Borough and a person with knowledge of Alaska Native Cultures, both of which are preferred.

Location: AARS, Pt. MacKenzie Road
Employment Status: Full-Time (40 hours)
Starting Pay: $20 per hour (position also includes a monthly gas allowance, health insurance stipend, and COVID vaccination bonus)
